Negative Keywords in Google Ads: How to Use Them to Stop Wasted Clicks
How negative keywords work, how their match types differ, what to add first and how to avoid blocking your own best searches.
How Performance Max works, what to prepare, how to control brand traffic and when a Search campaign is the safer choice.
Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that runs your ads across Google's channels from a single campaign. You provide goals, conversion tracking and creative assets, and Google's automation decides where and to whom they show. Google describes the channels as including Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps, though the exact list can change.
For many small Indian businesses, Performance Max sounds attractive: one campaign, less setup. But it gives you less control than Search, and it can spend money in places you did not expect if the inputs are weak. This guide explains how performance max campaigns work, what to prepare, and how to decide whether to use one.
A normal Search campaign starts with keywords you choose. Performance Max starts with a goal and a set of assets. Google then assembles ads from your text, images, logos and videos and tests combinations across its channels, aiming to maximise the conversions or conversion value you told it to chase.
This means the system is only as good as three things: the goal you set, the conversion data it learns from, and the assets you provide. If you count weak events as conversions, such as page views, it will find more of them. If you count real enquiries or sales, it learns to find more of those.
An asset group is the set of creative and signals the campaign uses: headlines, descriptions, images, logos, videos, a final URL and optional audience signals. Think of each asset group as one theme. A school might use separate asset groups for "Primary admissions" and "Higher secondary admissions", each with its own images and page.
The number of asset groups, the asset counts and the formats allowed are updated by Google, so verify them in the current documentation when you build.
If you run a shop on Shopify or WooCommerce, Performance Max can use your Google Merchant Center product feed to show your products in shopping placements. A clean feed matters: accurate titles with the product type and key attributes, correct prices and availability, good images and proper product identifiers where they exist.
Problems we see often include out-of-stock items still advertised, titles that lack the words customers search, and prices that do not match the website, which can lead to disapprovals. Fix the feed before you blame the campaign.
Audience signals let you suggest who is likely to convert, for instance your customer list, past website visitors or people with certain interests. Google treats them as a starting point. It can find people outside the signal when it expects a conversion. They are most useful early on, when the system has little data.
Use signals that reflect your real customers. Uploading a customer list needs consent and compliance with your privacy practices, so make sure you collect and use that data properly.
Performance Max can show ads for searches containing your own brand name, which are cheap and likely to convert anyway. That can make results look strong while hiding how well it finds new customers. To stay in control:
Tip: Compare Performance Max results with your Search campaigns by cost per real enquiry or by revenue, not by conversions alone. Otherwise brand clicks can flatter the numbers.
| Situation | Usually a good fit? |
|---|---|
| Online shop with a clean product feed and steady orders | Often yes |
| Lead generation business with solid conversion tracking and some history | Can work, with close review |
| New account with no conversion data | Start with Search first |
| Very small daily spend | Search is easier to control |
| Local service where calls matter and tracking is unreliable | Fix tracking first |
We often suggest building a Search campaign on high-intent keywords first, then adding Performance Max once there is conversion history. This is a judgement call and depends on your goals. Read common Google Ads mistakes for the setup basics that apply to both.
Automated campaigns have a learning phase after launch or major changes. Avoid editing budgets, targets and assets every few days. Make a change, note it, and review after enough data has built up. Meanwhile, check the reports Google provides by asset group and channel, watch the quality of leads in your own records, and look at whether your sales team agrees the enquiries are real.
Our Google Ads management service includes helping decide whether Performance Max fits your account and how to structure it.
It can be, mainly for online shops with a good product feed or for businesses that already have conversion history. For a new local business with a small budget, Search campaigns are usually easier to control and learn from.
Google has added negative keyword and brand exclusion options for Performance Max, but availability and limits can change. Check the current documentation inside your Google Ads account for what you can use.
Google does not promise a fixed period. Expect a learning phase after launch and after big changes, and judge results over weeks, not days. Lower conversion volume usually means a slower and less stable learning process.
A Search campaign shows text ads for the keywords you choose on Search. Performance Max uses assets and goals to show ads across multiple Google channels, with automation choosing placements. Search gives you more control, Performance Max gives Google more freedom.
Performance Max works best when the basics are right: accurate tracking, strong assets, a clean feed and a clear way to measure real results. If you are unsure whether it suits your business, talk to us and we will look at your account before you commit budget.
